It was in 1981 when
“Magnetic Fields” was finished and ready to impact the audiences. Never
before had Jarre used digital sampling technologies, which were made
available through Australia’s second most famous electronics and synth
export: FAIRLIGHT.
Another Jarre masterpiece came rushing into our ears and everyone instantly
fell in love with the sexiest eye in pop history and the more than catchy
“Magnetic Fields 2”. I remember listening to it at least a thousand times
without
knowing by who it was. This album was
a blast and came out in about 28 countries, including Guatemala, Norway,
Peru and Turkey.
All the 12 Inch releases of its first single, “Magnetic Fields 2” were
promos, whereas the Spanish 12 Inch of “Magnetic Fields 4”, a regular
release, is much more sought-after. There’s also a 7 Inch of “Magnetic
Fields 5” (Holland) which is quite rare.
There are not many different promo LP versions around: Japan (white label),
USA (factory sleeve with production sheet) and Argentina (promo stamped),
but some 7 Inches have promo status: “Magnetic Fields 2” and “Magnetic
Fields 4” (both Japan) and “Magnetic Fields 2” (Italy, with a different
artist on the B-side), as well as the mentioned 12 Inch maxi singles.
It’s interesting to see that “Magnetic Fields” was issued in some ‘new’
countries, such as Norway and Sweden.
Btw: the #1 most famous Australian electronics and synth export is E-mu
